Handy Substitutions v1

Alright so you’re midway through a recipe and realize you don’t have a certain ingredient. What do you do? Do you stop everything and run to the store? Do you just scrap what you’re cooking and order takeout? Or are there alternatives?

Below are some of the most common substitutions I use when cooking and I don’t have the exact ingredient. In the future, I will have more of these types of substitution posts as they relate to recipes I am making.

  • Buttermilk- you can combined 1T of white vinegar to 1C of regular milk and let it sit for 5 minutes to create buttermilk

  • Smoked paprika- Let’s say a recipe calls for 2T of smoked paprika. Instead of that you can do about 1.5T of regular paprika and .5T of cumin. This can be adjust as needed

  • Cilantro- basil or soap (joking- but some people think cilantro tastes like soap)

  • Heavy Cream- for 1cup of heavy cream you can use 3/4cup milk and 1/4cup melted butter

  • Butter- when frying, instead of butter you can use Olive oil
